Wallpaper on the Playroom Ceiling

<center></center><div style="text-align: justify;">The ceiling in the playroom is really low - just under eight feet. It actually feels nice and cozy, especially for the kids, but I wanted to try and trick the eye a little. I hung the yellow curtains almost up to the ceiling and that helped, but it felt like we needed something a little more exciting up on or by the ceiling.</div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo 26.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda014/26.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">I've always loved Julia Rothman's Daydream wallpaper from Hygge & West. In a middle-of-the-night design session I remembered the pattern and reached out the company to see if they had enough rolls in stock to send me a rush shipment. We were only a few days out from the Domino shoot at this point and I needed that paper ASAP!! Hygge & West was <i>wonderful </i>to work with and they rushed those couple of rolls out right away.</div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo 30.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda014/30.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo 11.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda014/11.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><br /><a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="more"></a><div style="text-align: justify;">I went with the green color way, which has a creamy background, soft blue clouds and the prettiest color of jade green on the sweet little birdies. When the girls walked in after the paper hangers were finished, there were all sorts of oohs and ahhs and even some squeals. :) A very good sign. Gracie called it magical, which was pretty much the perfect compliment. I think it feels pretty magical too.</div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">We finished out the edges with just some casing trim (no room for even a short crown) that we painted with left over paint from the bathroom ceiling (Farrow and Ball's Pale Powder). We matched the baseboards too and left the walls white (Benjamin Moore's Chantilly Lace).</div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo 31.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda014/31.jpg" /></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">The light fixture was a happy find at Lowes! It was a steal at $30!</div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo 28.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda014/28.jpg" /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo 29.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda014/29.jpg" /></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">The wallpaper was a relatively affordable way to quickly transform this space. I spent almost no money on anything else in the playroom, so I felt good about investing in the couple of rolls and the labor for the paper hangers. I did save a lot of money by prepping the walls myself. We skim coated every surface, including the ceiling, with hot mud and then primed it all. It was a ton of work, but it helped me feel better about hiring out the paper.  And really, we were so out of time, there was no way I could have hung this by myself. Plus it turns out there are all sorts of fancy contraptions the paper hanger used to install the long sheets at this angle. Tricky stuff! Sometimes it's best to leave installation to professionals - precious wallpaper is one of those times I think.</div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo 27.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda014/27.jpg" /></div><br />I couldn't be happier with this room. Reader DIY: Fireworks Wall Stencil

Hi guys! - Just a quick update for the locals planning to come to the <a href="http://workshops.homedepot.com/workshops/do-it-yourself-workshops?cm_mmc=socialmedia-_-Blogger-_-DIY-_-DIY-Workshops-Registration-Link" target="_blank">Home Depot DIY Workshop</a> tomorrow. I wanted to clarify that we won't be making the <a href="http://littlegreennotebook.blogspot.com/2014/07/diy-branch-light.html" target="_blank">lighting DIY</a> I shared last week, although I'd be more than happy to help you find and even make the structure tomorrow at the Tempe store on Baseline. Wallpaper in the Entry

<center></center>I love how high the ceilings are in our entry, but it makes it a little bit tricky to decorate in there! We saved a little bit of money by prepping the walls ourselves, but I wish I could have DIYed the whole thing. I've hung wallpaper a bunch of times before and it's usually a doable project, but this was definitely a job for the pros. A big part of it is we are completely out of time and this was a last minute decision, but the bottom line is I get dizzy just thinking about carefully hanging those long sheets on a 18' ladder! The Studio Bathroom Walls

<center></center><span style="font-family: inherit;">Yesterday I shared how I painted the studio bathroom tile black, which I'll admit, was sort of a big </span>commitment<span style="font-family: inherit;">. I wanted the room to feel girlie and fun, but still modern and interesting. It's technically our guest bathroom as well, but since Heather is living with us in the guest room, it's mostly just her and Kate and I that ever are in the space. So basically, I felt like I had free reign to go as girlie as I wanted!</span><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><i style="color: #666666; line-height: 22.399999618530273px; text-align: start;"><img alt=" photo StudioBath4.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda006/StudioBath4.jpg" /></i></div><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: inherit;">The previously white walls felt really stark in here since the only light source was (and still is) a pair of wall sconces, so I decided to warm up the color and to get a little experimental with a fun pattern.</span><br /><a name="more"></a><br /><br />After swinging by <a href="http://soch.us/A41y-LittleGreenNotebook1" target="_blank">The Home Depot</a> and picking up a few rolls of Scotch Blue<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Cambria; font-size: 16.363636016845703px;">™</span> Painter's Tape to experiment with, I finally had a lightbulb moment.<br /><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><i style="color: #666666; line-height: 22.399999618530273px; text-align: start;"><img alt=" photo StudioBath18.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda006/StudioBath18.jpg" /></i><span style="font-family: inherit;"> </span></div><span style="font-family: inherit; text-align: center;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: inherit; text-align: center;">I used <a href="https://www.blogger.com/%3Ca%20href=%22http://soch.us/-2Zb5Z%22%3E%20ScotchBlue%E2%84%A2%20Painter%E2%80%99s%20Tape%20%3C/a%3E" target="_blank">a roll of .94" ScotchBlue</a> (it's the Original Multi-Use 2090) to make an abstract line pattern on all the walls above the tile and even on the ceiling. </span>I was inspired by <a href="http://domino.com/donald-robertson" target="_blank">this uber-talented artist</a> that Domino featured in the current issue. He did a <a href="http://instagram.com/donalddrawbertson" target="_blank">similar treatment</a> to the walls in his home using duct tape. I love how these little lines are so simple and they make such a big visual impact.<br /><br />To make a pretty fast process go even faster, I cut the tape (5-7" or so in random lengths) in large batches all at once before applying the strips to the walls.<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><i style="color: #666666; line-height: 22.399999618530273px; text-align: start;"><br /></i><i style="color: #666666; line-height: 22.399999618530273px; text-align: start;"><img alt=" photo StudioBath8.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda006/StudioBath8.jpg" /></i></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">It's easy to make the abstract pattern and it actually looks best if you don't over-think things while you're placing the tape on the walls. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i style="color: #666666; line-height: 22.399999618530273px; text-align: start;"><img alt=" photo StudioBath9.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda006/StudioBath9.jpg" /></i></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><span style="font-family: inherit;">Like with any painting project, it's important to really press down the edges of the ScotchBlue tape before you paint. </span><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><i style="color: #666666; line-height: 22.399999618530273px; text-align: start;"><img alt=" photo StudioBath1.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda006/StudioBath1.jpg" /></i></div><br /><div style="text-align: left;">Don't forget to let the line continue in and through the corners and be sure to start some pieces below the actual starting line (the tile in my case). We don't have any windows in this bathroom, but I'm thinking this color would be gorgeous in natural light. The basic idea is to use hardboard to create a faux front. I had these babies up in about 20 minutes! I love them and I love the way the light from the exposed bulbs plays on the abstract line pattern on the walls.
